Newsletter #48: September 2014

Prism Glassworks Newsletter
September 2014
Issue No.48

Dear Friends,

Last month we had Sean Foley a.k.a. STF Glass for our monthly Troy Night Out Demo. He came through with his demo "Gettin' Lippy With It." Sean brought a bunch of his minitubes and sherlocks, all of which were based around his use of encalmos and lipwraps. He mentioned that although he has been blowing glass for seventeen years he has only been playing with encalmos exclusively for the past year. Sean decided to use purple lilac, slyme, and blue leprechaun for his minitube. I made a couple of marbles to attach to the piece. One was made using slyme, blue leprechaun, and an opal in a dot-stack pattern, while the other was an implosion marble using fumed cane and a small opal. Sean made his signature STF implosion marble to finish off the attachments. Even though it was Labor Day Weekend a decent sized crowd showed up and watched from about 8:30 pm on. Here are some photos from the night and the stills of the finished rig. Thanks again Sean for a great demo and an awesome piece for the gallery!

During the demo we also had an art show going on in the gallery. Life Of Worth brought some great artwork into the gallery for their collective show. It was great to have all of the work in the shop. Almost all of the members have had a solo show in the gallery, and it was great to see all of them and their work together.

Dear Friends,

Last month we had Kevin for our monthly Troy Night Out Demo and a weekend advanced class. He came through with his demo "Fumealicious" and his lesson plan for "Fumeology 101." Kevin brought a few fume sherlocks, sidecars, and pendants with him, which were awesome. Kevin started off the day by getting used to my Herbie and we collabed on a warm up dry hammer. Kevin made the pipe while I made marbles to attach to it. For the demo Kevin decided to make a fully fumed sidecar. It was amazing to watch how meticulous he was. The can of the pipe is made up of three separate sections and the neck was two. Unlike a pipe made using reversal balls, Kevin made each section off of separate pieces of tubing. And when it came to the shaping of a horns, Kevin made many small moves to make them was exactly how they should be. He would move the horns millimeter by millimeter until each looked perfect.  The weekend class was also amazing. We had a full class excited to learn Kevin's techniques. There were so many glassblowers that wanted to take the class, but because of the limited space a lot of them showed up on Friday night to watch him work. It truly was an amazing weekend. Thank you Kevin for a great demo and an awesome class! We have some great pieces made by Kevin Nail in the gallery.

During the demo we also had an art show going on in the gallery. Megan Davenport brought some paintings for her gallery show "Diesel Daydreams." Thank you Megan for bringing some great work into the gallery!

This month we have Marty Preston's demo "Full Circle" and Thomas Hua's gallery show "Transience."

Marty Preston's bio in his own words:

My intro to glass came at age 18 when I was lucky enough to have met a glassblower named Mitch while at my first year of college. Mitch was an apprentice at prism glassworks and through him was able to get a few classes in with Phil Sundling who generously shared his knowledge and pizza. Shortly after I moved to Vermont and didn't blow glass again until several years later when I moved to Maine and started working at Royal River. There I learned the fundamentals I needed as well as getting my first torch. Since then I have moved between Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, and currently North Carolina. I have worked with many talented artists along the way and feel like I owe a debt of gratitude to all of them. In particular I'd like to thank Phil, KGB, Mr. Gray, Steve Bates, Ukiah, Kurt B, Josh B, WC Stearns, everybody in Maine, NH, and Asheville, as well as all the stores and collectors who have supported me. I'm very happy to be able to come back to where I started, and would never have made it without the support from my friends and family. I love what I do and am very grateful for the life I live.

Thomas Ling Hua is a local artist from Troy, NY.  He graduated from SUNY Albany in 2010, majoring in Fine Arts.  His work is influenced by the figural subject with an abstract nature.  For the upcoming exhibit, “Transience”, a blend of works were selected to highlight various mediums and styles utilized by the artist.

Upcoming demos:

August 29th - STF Glass "Getting Lippy With It"
September - Melt Away Cancer: A Flameraiser for Ovarian Cancer (For More Information Look Below)
October 31st - Tristian Hodges
November 28th - Tammy Baller

Upcoming class: Robert Mickelsen "Busy Being Born" August 1st-2nd
(Two Spaces Have Opened Up).

I hope to see you this Friday, July 25th for Troy Night Out!

Sincerely,

~Phil Sundling
